4 90's Bands That Haven't Aged Well

A few months ago, I mentioned in a blog post about how I like to listen to 90's music from time to time because I'm nostalgic at an early age.  (Wait, did I say I "mentioned" that?  It was more like "drunkenly rambled", which is how I talk about most things).  Whenever I go on these nostalgia trips - *Buuuuurp*, I'm surprised to find myself liking songs I didn't used to like.  It's as if these formally mediocre songs have aged like a fine wine, somehow making these songs good in retrospect.  I assume anyway, as the only fine wine I've ever had was a glass of Arbor Mist that a Frenchmen spit in.

Not all 90's bands have aged like a fine wine though.  Some have aged more like that case of MD 20/20 I forgot about in the closet for three years.  Even nostalgia goggles can't save them.  Beer goggles might, but only if you are drinking Evil Eye malt liquor.

This band tastes like Evil Eye.  The beer sounds okay though.

These are four 90's bands that haven't aged well.

1.  Matchbox 20

First of all, is their band name Matchbox 20 or Matchbox Twenty?  Secondly, what does Boxmatch 20 even mean?  Is it in reference to that entire pack of cigarettes they smoked that one night when they were debating how to make the band not suck anymore?  I guess the idea they agreed on was not being Latchknox 40 anymore and letting Rob Thomas cheat on the band with Santana.  The song he did with Santana,"Smooth", was way more popular than any Catchflax 2000 song ever was.  I assume Rob Thomas begged Santana to make him a permanent member of his band but Santana refused because Thomas is not nearly as Mexican as he claimed.  No Mexican would grow that ridiculous fucking mullet.

Flatmax 60 was inexplicably popular in the 90's despite sucking the rock out of alternative rock.  They were alternative alright, just more like the alternative choice for people who thought Everclear was too edgy.  Their only purpose was to give VH1 something to show when they ran out of Savage Garden videos.  VH1 loved them hard actually.  They talked about Natchblast 22 more than they showed the Behind the Music episode of Motley Crue.  I'm amazed every VH1 countdown about the 90's isn't just filled with Rob Thomas arguing about how he invented the Emo look with the video to "Unwell".

Crazy.  Unwell.  Dropping acid.  Whatever.

2. The Rembrandts

When the most lasting legacy of a band is, "Theme song from Friends," then the band can never call themselves artists ever again.  The Rembrandts are what Oasis would sound like if they were on Zoloft.  They also styled their hair as if they wrote the theme song to Seinfeld.   Actually, I'm starting to notice a pattern between mullets and shitty 90's bands.  There is just so much party on their heads, they had no energy left to give to their bland music.

 No relation. - Via Fotopedia.

The Rembrandts are the background music you hear while shopping at the mall.  It's that boring, lifeless music for tasty cakes who take offense to Shakespeare in the Park.  The Rembrandts are the saltine crackers of music.   Show me somebody who thought a Rembrandts song was offensive and I'll show that person tentacle porn.

3.  Hootie and the Blowfish

I'd really like to know how they came up with this band name.  Was Hootie given that nickname in high school but then decided to just roll with it?  I'm amazed the other band members are not named Scooter, Big Time Johnson, and Jager McFlavor.  Before making it big, they would have played most of their gigs at frat houses like Psi Kappa Date Rapieya.  And really, blowfish?  Didn't the other band members protest this and want at least a cool animal name like sharks or tapeworms or something?  It's like they all sat down one night and tried to think of a band name worse than The Goo Goo Dolls.

Saying their music sucks is an understatement.  Their instrumentals have such a douchey feel to them that John Mayer looks like a musical visionary in comparison.  Their lyrics were probably stolen from an after school PSA about not talking to strangers.  They have the charisma and stage presence of a Lehman Brothers CEO.  This band fails more than the Colorado Rockies.

And their video for their biggest hit, "Only Want to be With You", is the most unintentionally strange video I have ever seen.  What does Sportscenter have to do with only wanting to be with, my bros, I guess?  This song doesn't seem to be about a girl but if it is, I don't blame her for wanting nothing to do with a man named Hootie.  And why does Hootie own an NBA franchise?  Why is Dan Marino in this video?  Does Hootie only want to be with Dan Marino?

Laces out, Dan!

4.  Paula Cole.

Much like The Rembrandts above, Paula Cole will mostly be remembered for doing the theme song to a TV show.  The song I'm talking about is "I Don't Want to Wait", or more accurately, "IdaWannaWay", which is the theme song to Dawson's Creek.  I freely admit to watching the first season of that show because girls liked it and, somehow, that would get me laid (I didn't think this plan all the way through).  However, what I didn't expect was to learn something far more valuable than how to take off a bra.  I learned about feelings.  My feelings.  I, apparently, have emotions.  I learned how to let my feminine side, like, feel things, you know?  I learned how to be sensitive to others emotions and to be there, just to listen.  I learned to share a good cry with someone from time to time.  Just really let it out you know?

Oh.  And I too would have totally banged that teacher dawg!  Dat was sick, Pacey!  Fist bump brah!

"Come on Brah!  Don't leave me hanging.  Brah!  Yo, Brah!"

What was I talking about?  Oh right!  Paula Cole.  The song that she recorded unfortunately doesn't help explain how a grown woman could fall in love with a kid named Pacey.  Who names their kid Pacey?  I guess after high school, he became a member of Hootie and the Blowfish for a while.  That is, as long as he didn't choke to death on a beer bong.

Sorry.  I started on another tangent.  See, it is impossible to talk about "I Don't Want to Wait" as a song because you can't disconnect it from Dawson's Creek.  And since Dawson's Creek sucked, well.....

Fortunately for this blog post that's going nowhere, she has another major hit you might remember.  "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone", or as my parents call it, that "Do Do Do Song", is a song about Paula doing cliche women things while the man drinks beer and....pays bills?  What, do you NOT want him to pay bills?  That is a pretty weak feminist battle cry.  Plus, wanting a John Wayne is a poor contrast to a drunk since John Wayne was, you know, a drunk.  He also happened to cheat on each of his three wives, one of which, tried to shoot him.  What an American icon!

Of course, the best way to get your point across is to whisper half the words.

Paula Cole tries hard but her music just falls short.  If you want good feminist music, try Ani DiFranco or Tori Amos.  Their feminism goes a little further than just whining about men being assholes.  I'd even settle for Sarah McLachlan if you don't mind her trying to rape you or making you cry during commercials.  Oh god.  I need to adopt all those puppies and kittens right now, but I can't afford it!  Damnit it, Sarah!  My feelings don't feel good.  I'm going to go eat a bucket of ice cream.

Disclaimer:  This article is satirical and I know Sarah McLachlan's "Possession" is inspired by her stalker.  I actually like that song.  As for the Blowfish, I think I get it now.  Eating the wrong part of a blowfish is poison right?  So, it's like music poison.  AHHH.  It all makes sense now.

Is Indie Music Returning to the Pop Charts? Again?

2004 was a strange year when it came to pop music.  It was the year a bunch of indie bands like Modest Mouse, Postal Service, The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Franz Ferdinand and a few others all sacrificed Jessica Simpson's few remaining brain cells to get hit songs in the top 100.  I like to call it the "Indie Spring" since it's the season for rebellion and because I am horribly insensitive to Muslims being confused for Arabs.

"He was more rebellious when he had a beard." - Some random girl at a Modest Mouse concert.
Via blog.lolitanie.com

During this time, indie was very much, not -indie for a while and it seemed like alternative rock might brake away from it's music snob, hipster niche that now hated these bands since cool kids liked them before they were popular.  These indie bands were going to be the "new grunge" and they would change the rules so that pop stars can't have a major hit just by screaming "Yyyyyeahyyyaaa" and "Uhhhhhooooo-kay" over and over again.

But, being naive about pop music is what I do, so of course this didn't happen.  Instead, all they really did was make rock music relevant enough for a 2005 where Green Day's American Idiot was so popular the album was appointed Prime Minister of France.  The problem is, the only thing indie about Green Day is it's vague reference to Earth Day.  The likelihood of the 2004 Indie Spring having any effect on Green Day's success is about as likely as a self proclaimed punk rock band thinking one of their albums would be perfect for a Broadway musical adaptation.  Right, because Phantom of the Opera was so punk, the orchestra styled their hair into liberty spikes.

Moments before the 1st chair cellist is called to the stage.  Via Wikimedia Commons.

So it comes as somewhat of a surprise to me to find more indie rock-ish sounding songs in the top 100 right now.  Granted, these are mostly not bands that already had a dozen albums before having a big hit like Modest Mouse, whom all their new fans probably thought the band was just a side project for Danger Mouse.  No, most of these bands are brand new and can only be called indie in that some of them may claim to draw inspiration from Wilco.

One of these bands is Fun, who has that "We Are Young" song you've probably heard 472 times today and only once realized a band named themselves with an adjective.  Funny, but my Emo band titled "Sad" didn't do so well.  Actually, that's not funny.  That's just sad.  "Sad" is sad.  The first self aware band name since The Who before they got famous.

Another indie sounding artist is Gotye with a song called "Somebody That I Used To Know".  That song features a female vocalist named Kimbra who also happens to be a Lion Queen.  Also, Gotye is naked in the songs video presumably because he was always pissed about his artist ex-girlfriend never wanting him to pose nude for a painting.

"I refuse to paint his barbed penis."

Those two songs are #1 and #2 respectively (well, they were before they flipped spots), followed by two boy bands because that was a fad that needed to comeback, and of course, the Biebs. Yet, it's to early to argue that a second Indie Spring is underway.  The highest an actual indie band is is M83's song "Midnight City", a pretty awesome song that failed to realize MGMT and Passion Pit were popular two years ago.  Hopefully those obviously dangerous children in the song's video don't try to throw a squirrel at my crotch with their telekinesis because I just made fun of the band.  Hey, I like this song guys and I am soooo jealous about your mind powers that I would drink a glass of french fry grease from a New Jersey Jack-in-the-Box to have what you have.

These kids have such a bright future.  Like, killing 30 million people and declaring themselves gods.

A second Indie Spring would be nice though.  For all the good that Lady Gaga has brought to pop music (yes, good.  I can appreciate her efforts to push pop music into weird, nightmare sex monster territory) it doesn't seem to have had a lasting effect.  Pop music went right back into it's usual "lets go to the club, drink, drink, drink, dance, dance, dance, boner, grind, grind, grind, slap, stabbed by boyfriend" routine.   Hopefully the standard has been raised by Adele but that requires talent.  Something woefully lacking when it's possible to get a hit song by claiming yes, it is hot in HER, taking off all my clothes sounds like a choice idea.

The small but surprising indie trend is certainly worth paying attention too for the rest of the year.  I know another Nirvana is never going to come around and make pop music it's bitch, but at least a little variety in pop music would be nice.  It gets a little tiresome when you can put the radio on a pop station and hear 4 different Katy Perry songs in an hour.  Micheal Jackson didn't have that kind of overplay and he straight up thrilled all night.

3 Ways to Fix Our Battered Economy

Criminals run everything. That’s an undisputed fact. Like, 100% undisputed. And that’s why the American economy is sicker than I get the morning after Tequila Tuesdays at my neighborhood taco shop. They love me there. The owner always calls me “Gringo” and “Pendejo” which he says mean “Friend” and “Stellar Guy.” I love that place…

But back to the state of our current financial hell. We certainly seem to be up shit’s creek. And much of the world seems to be right there with us. Somewhat because of us, in fact. And then there are the countries that aren’t suffering so badly, but those aren’t great places to live anyway. Look at China, for example. The chief reason that their economy is doing so well is because they’re totally fine with cutting down every tree they have just so they can build one more factory, smog is their number one export, and they haven’t spent any money on fuel since they discovered that peasants and excess baby girls burn as efficiently as coal. There’s no way Americans would want to live like that. Plus, we don’t have that many extra babies.

What we need to do is focus on our own specific problems, analyze them in minute detail, and come up with sound fiscal plans. As it stands, though, identifying our problems is about as difficult as putting your whole fist in your mouth (i.e. fairly easy), but coming up with a plan is as difficult as getting your fist back out of your mouth (i.e. “Itth acgualllly wullly hawd”).

You can look at the situation that’s been going on with questionable business practices and how that translates to trading on the stock market. Everyone agrees that there is a problem related to corporations and Wall Street (slide that fist in the mouth…), but then half the analysts argue that we need more oversight and stricter regulations, whereas the other half of the analysts call for no oversight and complete de-regulation. Oh, look at that. Your fist is stuck in your mouth. Wow. It’s really jammed in there. And since we’re America, we slathered that fist with bacon grease thinking that would make it easier to pull out, and now… Hey! Hey, stop that America! Quit trying to eat your own fist! God damnit, America. How embarrassing.

The baby can get his fist in his mouth. Now you should try it to prove
you're smarter than the baby.

But I, for one, can’t fix that problem with Wall Street and big business. I wish I could. I could have gone to business school, studied macroeconomics and the ever-changing dynamic global capitalistic market, but I didn’t. I studied English Literature and got an arts degree instead. Sorry mom and dad. Now I can dexterously discuss Proust and Shakespeare, I can provide an in-depth critique of postmodern texts, and I can even delve into… wait for it… gender studies. GASP! But I don’t have the necessary skills to talk about most of the economic problems we face right now that are all the rage in Washington debates. I briefly considered going back to school and earning a business degree in research for this post, but honestly, it takes me long enough to write one of these articles as it is, so I nixed that plan. Not to mention the fact that you’d have to be a complete fucking idiot to go back to school in this economic climate and incur more debt*. (*Note: this author just wasted TONS of money applying for grad school (Sorry mom and dad. Again))

No, I can’t help with those problems, but maybe I can still find my own ways to help with America’s economy. There are things we can all do, really, like saving our money, buying only practical items and not wasting our pay on frivolous purchases, making sound investments that help up-and-coming businesses grow, or eating healthy and exercising so we don’t spend all our money on doctors bills and shitty insurance plans that really don’t help us much anyway. But those are all common sense ideas. Anybody could come up with those. In fact, I’m sure 90% of Americans already do all that stuff. So our economy needs more than that. It needs some fresh ideas that no one’s thought of yet, and I just might be the man for the job.

1)   Get rid of the anti-smoking ads.
What used to be America’s best export? Not cars, not electronics, not steel. It was Cool. The best thing we gave the world was our Coolness. It started all the way back when the first travelers came across the Atlantic. They had the balls to sail uncharted waters in shitty weather and tell the kings and queens of their old countries, “Fuck you, I don’t need your shit anymore.” That’s the attitude of a teenager leaving their parents’ house to move in with some slutty boyfriend/girlfriend. It’s shortsighted and immature, but it worked out. This spirit continued with the badass pioneers and cowboys, which is when other countries really started to sit up and take notice of our crazy balls-to-the-walls method of doing things. We risked our lives to do shit that hadn’t been done before. Then some drunk hillbillies and blind black dudes got together and started a kind of music called Rock’n’Roll. There are countless other examples showcasing how absolutely Cool we were. It wasn’t perfect, by far, but Cool never is. That’s part of what makes it Cool though.

Somewhere along the way, we lost that. Now we have people on the left making us look like wussy babies, and people on the right making us look like cranky scared old fogeys. Now, when Americans feel that familiar impulse to be reckless, instead of plugging in an amp and playing a guitar chord so powerful it blows out our neighbors’ windows, we just Big-E-Size our fast food meals and get fat.

I was going to tag something scathing and political, but I got hungry and forgot.

We need to start smoking again. Everyone. Men. Women. Kids. Bring back the Marlboro Man and Joe Camel. Start airing commercials for filterless Lucky Strikes again. How cool was it that Obama used to smoke?!? We had a president that smoked. And then we lost that again. Well, kind of. I have a sneaking suspicion that Obama still smokes on occasion, just not in front of Michelle or his daughters, or any cameras. Think about it: you know in your heart that when they saw the footage of U.S. troops kill Osama Bin Laden, Barack and Joe Biden lit up two huge cigars, drank beers, and laughed their asses off all night until they both puked. My point is, if we get rid of the anti-smoking ads and get everyone smoking, then the rest of the world will start to think we’re Cool again. They’ll want to be like us just the way they used to. If they think America is badass, they will buy all of our other shit so they can emulate us to the max!

Residual Effects: With the anti-smoking ads gone, pro-smoking ads will return, along with other reckless, crazy, cool ads for other bullshit, and after all it’s really advertising that has always driven the American economy. Also, due to the abysmal health problems associated with smoking, we will pump all of our money into the healthcare and insurance industries which can become the new backbone of America’s financial growth.

2)  We need more Katy Perry music videos.
Hey, don’t get pissed at me for saying that. I hate her music more than most people. I hate her music more than your neighborhood pedophile hates it when you’re being an attentive parent. I’m just the messenger. This is the medicine, and you’ll just have to choke it down.

Why will this work? Because, sadly, there are enough people who like her music. Then, beyond the tendency of masses of people to like horrendous music, lays the phenomenon that when pop music stars are at their peak popularity, they attract the attention and energy of Every Other Pop Music Star In The Universe. Their popularity becomes a type of gravitational pull, drawing more and more trite music stars into their field of influence, regardless if those other “artists” are popular or not themselves. Eventually, the force becomes so intense that a MegaPopBlackHole forms, consuming MTV (all of them), entertainment/gossip shows, the radio, magazines, the internet, and iTunes. This is a phenomenon, called the Neal-Einstein Quantum Suckfest, in which the pop star’s crappiness is exponentially proportional to how massively popular they can become with the addition of more crappy stars. That’s a real law of theoretical physics, by the way. You could look it up, but you don’t have a physics textbook.

This SuckFest briefly formed after a rumor that Lady Gaga and Coldplay would get together for a Hamburger Helper commercial on the Opera Network.

Katy Perry is nearly at this level of super-stardom. Don’t get me wrong, I know she’s already huge and successful, but she’s not quite there. Let’s review her progression to the Quantum Suckfest. She apparently kissed a girl and apparently she liked it. That’s great. Annoyingly catchy song sure to piss off parents, make teenagers giggle, and then add to that the irony that she’s made ignorant homophobic comments in the past. Then she has some dumb and over-sexed song/video with Snoop Dogg in it for some reason. More pissed off parents, more giggling teenagers, and more pop culture paradoxes. Next, she marries Russell Brand (and is now probably divorcing him). Finally, we’re getting to the point where the pop gravitational forces are sucking so hard that I’m getting light-headed.

What we need now to push this mess over the edge is for Perry to come out with a song/video incorporating Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber. The song can be titled, “Saturday: the follow-up to ‘Friday’ because Saturday comes after Friday.” Timbaland can produce it, then Weezer can show up for some reason, and the video will have some of those “I Can Has Cheezburger” cats in it. The media will go nuts. The video will stream on the internet and play repeatedly on Fox News around the clock. Rumors of a Perry/Black/Bieber threesome will be so shocking and titillating that it will boost digital sales of the song, and the scandal will revive the printed newspaper. Finally, the porn industry will make countless movies of the “Saturday Threeway,” hiring so many “actors” that the unemployment rate will drop to negative numbers.

Residual Effects: Russell Brand gets jealous of all the attention his (ex-)wife is getting, so he continues to star in and ruin remakes of more classics like “Arthur” which keeps dumb people going to the theater. Or the world completely fucking ends.

3)  We need a tax on Douchebag Words.
Okay, so I already said that I didn’t have a solution to the complicated and troublesome relationship between corporations, the stock market, and government regulation, but this idea comes close. I know I’m not an analyst, so my idea can’t really rely on math and statistics. I can’t even use the knowledge of the past that a historian might utilize to predict and ultimately control the flow of future financial market trends. Rather, my idea has to do with holding our leaders accountable.

In the political arena you can see a lot of people standing on their soapboxes. I mean, what are they doing up there on boxes of soap anyway? And this is even worse now that it’s election season. Yet, for all the yelling, all the hot air, and all the finger pointing, these politicians have no real answers or substantial solutions. There's just a lot of that Fist In Mouth Disease going around. Like I mentioned earlier, half of them want stricter rules and the other half want looser rules. And maybe they want more soap too? I'm not sure, I'm still trying to figure that one out. Regardless, the people in government, and even the citizens of this country, are so evenly divided that neither side can out-vote the other. It’s a stalemate.

But what seem to be of agreement are the words. Both sides use the same tools, the same rhetoric, the same vocabulary. And it’s all god-damned fucking terrible! Each time I hear one of these sacks of shit say, “Main Street versus Wall Street,” it makes me vomit blood. Every single time one of these POLITICIANS on the election circuit tries to blame “those people in Washington” for the mess we’re in my testicles scrunch back up into my abdomen. This goes double for Obama since I actually kind of like that dude. But when he uses those same buzzwords to try to rally his political base, he sounds like a twat.

Oh Holy Shit Bile Just Shot Out Of My Eye Sockets!!!!

That’s why we need to institute a tax on Douchebag Words.

We keep arguing about taxes. Do we need to tax the rich, or the banks? Are there already too many taxes? Should there be a flat tax? Do we need the Estate Tax? Should the wealthy and privileged Americans pull more economic weight than people who don’t have any money? Stop asking these questions. I propose that instead of arguing about whether to tax the rich, we tax the politicians who make our mess stickier than the green-brown blob in my fridge.

Who runs for office? The wealthy. But not just any type of wealthy. They are the people who have so much excess money and time, and such an urge to tell other people how to act that they go into politics.  They make Lex Luthor look like an adorable kitten who donates millions of dollars to charity. Poor people can’t afford to run for office. And decent/sane people are afraid to do it because some opponent will come out with an attack ad claiming that the decent/sane person may have had sex with a dog while performing an abortion to fund lesbian Islamists from Mexico.

We don’t need to just tax the rich. We need to tax the Douchebag Words used by the people who happen to be rich, crazy, and full of bullshit enough to run for office. “Main St. vs. Wall St.” Oops, Douchebag Word Tax. “Our nation’s REAL values…” Oops, you just got Douchebag Word Taxed! “I think what America really needs…” Oh, you just cost yourself $400,000. Wait, you just made some speech in Iowa where you compared/contrasted the Tea Party in any way to Washington Fat Cats twenty-three times? Ah, I’m sorry, that will cost you a hundred bucks each.

The Douchebag Word Tax will force politicians to do something they haven’t had to do since long before the McCarthy Hearings: think before they speak. Before they regurgitate the same hack lines they think voters will respond to, they will have to check their wallets. The other bonus is that, unlike any of the current plans to fix the American economy, the Douchebag Word Tax has a legitimate chance of passing a popular vote.

Residual Effects: Rich douchebags go broke for talking out their asses, simultaneously paying off America’s absurd debt. Also: some goddamned peace and quiet for a change.

How Did Adele Get So Popular?

I've always found pop music to not only be the worst form of popular entertainment but also the most predictable.  This is because good pop music is rarer than winning a fist fight with a bear.  A musician needs to be like a drunk Russian to have any luck recording a good song.  The problem is that there just are not that many drunk Russian musicians (I assume) so most of pop music is populated with buzzed Spaniards, who are not known for being masters of Tai-Grizzly-Fu.  However, all it takes is just one of the buzzed Spaniards to get on a hot streak and the market is then flooded with mediocre bear fighters.  Or, pop songs.  I'm getting my analogies confused again.

A voice like this kills hundreds of bears a year.

My point is, my best guess as to why so much of pop music is predictable garbage revolves around people who are not good at what they do.  I think one mediocre song got inexplicably popular years ago, so every other musician is ordered by their record labels to copy it until artificial intelligence trumps human creativity with scientific creativity, the most science-y of art.   If the modern pop charts are to be believed, that original mediocre song was a dance song about dancing, sex, or sex dancing.  People must have decided this was a good thing and rewarded the record labels by stealing buying the shitty music.

Since pop music is dominated by dance songs, I find it interesting when an artist or band breaks away from the predictable dance party circle jerk.  The artist of the year for 2011 was Adele, a woman who actually sings well, has producers who create good music, and doesn't look like a jailbait skank with daddy issues.  She became artist of the year despite her music not making anybody want to grind their boner on a sexual harassment lawsuit while drinking a cocktail in a test tube with a deceptive amount of Bacardi 151 in it.   And no, Lil Wayne did not do a guest verse on any of her songs considering every song with Lil Wayne in it is in the top 40 except for his own.

So how did Adele get so popular?

Adele is not all that original.  Florence and the Machine has a similar, albeit more drum heavy, sound and comes from the UK just like Adele and every other musician ever.  Despite this, that band did not get nearly as popular as Adele but that might be because the lead singer looks like a clown who works in a medical marijuana store.  Then again, it's possibly because the populace has been trained to rage against the machine, not sing and dance with it.

Maybe it's a metaphorical machine just like her metaphorical band.

Adele is also a great singer, but being a great singer usually means nothing at the altar of autotune unless, of course, your Frank fucking Sinatra.  Even Mariah Carey, the living doll with an eight octave range, hasn't had a hit in years.  Although, to be fair, all of her songs now are about friendship and puppies because her mind never progressed past that of a 12 year old.  She probably spends her days off making scrap books with pictures of sunflowers and wedding cakes.

Adele can't be popular because of her looks either.  She looks like an average American woman that I, for one, would still bone.  I wonder if the director was not sure what to do in the "Rolling in the Deep" music video since she does not look like a stripper and didn't feel right filming a video that doesn't take place in a club.  She is sitting down in the entire video either because if your not dancing, you should obviously be sitting down, or because the hot shot director has never seen a women of average weight and thought that she might break an ankle if she stands up for too long.

The director - "I need like, 200 glasses of water.  Trust me, it's symbolic."

The "Someone Like You" video is in black and white because the song is sad and colors are only for happy people.  Wait, black and white?  Why that instantly makes this artistic!  Pretentious director level up!  Well actually, this is the music industry and not the movie industry so the pathetic, more likely reason it's in black and white is because black is slimming.

Somewhere, a film school professor just came.

There is the possibility that Adele got popular because of nothing to do with her music.  There is always the more important power of having connections.  The current number one song in the nation is LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It", a song that is so godawful, that I would rather listen to a raving lunatic on a street corner with a rotting raccoon carcass strapped to his head scream about pasta recipes. But the only reason that song is even known is because those guys happen to be the son and grandson of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records.  Another example is Hot Chelle Rae, a band who I think used to be the freecreditreport.com band.  Their guitarist is the son of a country songwriter and the brother of a Glee cast member, which explains not only their popularity, but the reason why my penis tries to recede into my body every time I hear their music.  Adele?  No such connections although she did go to a very selective arts school.  The same one that created, DUN DUN DUNNNNN, Amy Winehouse.  So obviously...uh, wait.  That might actually be a connection that is detrimental to success.

I would almost, almost, accept the simple fact that Adele makes good music as reason enough for being so popular.  But that logically would conclude that all good music should be just as popular and oh I get it.  I get it now.  I'm trying to apply logic, to POP MUSIC because I'm a fucking idiot.  Pop music is where Logic goes to get spanked by a transvestite in a Richard Nixon mask.  Pop music is the dirty little secret that logic keeps just so it can take a vacation and forward all it's phone calls to Aristotle.

Obviously, the answer to why Adele is so popular is blind luck.  Her popularity is what pop music isn't, unpredictable.  Although, I like the fact she is popular, even though it makes no sense.  I like knowing good music can still get popular.  It's also nice to know that a drunk Russian can still make it to the top 40 in bear fighting.

3OH!3 Sucks.

I know I'm very late to the trash 3OH!3 party as the Internet banded together in 2010 to collectively make fun of one of the worst bands in music today, but we cannot forget how truly awful they are just because they are busy working on a new album. This is a crucial time for a bands evolution as they drift behind the scenes after their big breakthrough hit like Herpes without visible sores. They will either fade into obscurity with only their hardcore dipshit fans still following them or they will reappear just in time to remind people how awful they are but still have enough fans to poison the radio for at least 5 more years. People need to forget 3OH!3 just like they forgot about all those indie bands like Modest Mouse and the YeahYeahYeahs after 2004, except some of those songs were actually good and deserved to be in the top 40. The only top 40 list 3OH!3 deserves to be in is "The Top 40 Bands Most Likely to Impregnate You Then Run Away and Refuse to Pay Child Support."
"Diamond" Dallas Page hasn't forgotten about the band using his hand gesture

This band has had two very successful singles, "Don't Trust Me" in 2008 and "My First Kiss" in 2010. All their other singles I have never heard (Or have heard but don't remember. I am opening their Wikipedia page and that is it for this blog post. I am not going to do more research than that unless I ingest enough alcohol to kill a Rhinoceros). Either of these songs could qualify as the worst song of the year or possibly even qualify as the best two songs ever recorded by monkeys.

"Don't Trust Me" is about hoes. The band being hoes, girls being hoes, and confusing Helen Keller as some sort of belly dancer. Actually, this might be the first piece of media portraying Helen Keller as a sex symbol. That would be praise worthy if it wasn't so profoundly retarded.

Everything about this song is stupid. Using the word tongue in two consecutive lines, singing about girls who kiss setlists as if that is a thing, and the cartoonish "whoas" at the end of every line in the chorus makes me think this song was used as a Guantanamo Bay torture device. Also, the misogyny in this song is rampant, an accusation the band hasn't bothered to defend themselves from. It's as if people said, "3OH!3 is just a couple of women hating future (present?) rapists" and the band just said, "Yup!"

And as if one song about hating women wasn't enough, the band had to double down by releasing a song even worse called "My First Kiss", which featured Ke$ha for three lines and who has single-handedly set women's rights back to the Middle Ages.

I guess all of their fans are in the 8th grade. And why are two twenty-somethings singing about their first kiss in the present tense? At one point they are talking about kissing under the bleachers as if they are in high school but just seconds later they are talking about sitting in the back of a car on the way to a bar. Actually, that kind of makes sense. High School girls are probably the only ones naive enough to actually make out with these dicks. Now, the fact that 3OH!3 is gloating about this is something so strange, modern science's best theory revolves around microwaves from Alpha Centauri frying the parts of their brains that regulates judgement. The police will just play this song in the interrogation room to get a confession from these idiots because they have never heard of Age of Consent laws.

Defenders of 3OH!3 will probably claim the song is about a first kiss with some hook up or new girlfriend and that the bleacher reference is about college where many students are of drinking age. Bullshit. "Can I get you at your panties" has never worked on a 21-year old or older girl in the history of bad pick up lines...I hope. If it has, then you can't really blame them for not respecting women.

The pantie line isn't the only bad one. The 2nd verse makes no sense whatsoever. "No more sailors and no more soldiers"? What does that have to do with anything? Is 3OH!3 hitting on a girl who is into military men? Sounds like you're in for a severe ass kicking. Then there is the, "Your kiss is like whiskey, it gets me drunk" line. Yeah, thanks for explaining that one to us. Either the band thought the audience didn't know the effects of whiskey, or the girl they are talking about is some sort of succubus who has whiskey for saliva. Or they are kissing a very drunk girl, which brings us full circle.
NOT THAT CIRCLE!

This song either implies statutory rape with a drunk high school girl or at least date rape with a drunk girl who is of age. Still don't believe me? The chorus says, "If I had it my way, you know that I'd make her say, oooooohh". Classy. The band just lays their intentions out there like it's written on a T-shirt. Their merchandise at shows would have slogans printed on them saying, "no fat chicks" and "professional booty inspector". I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually release a song where they rip off the great Christopher Walken, Blue Oyster Cult SNL sketch with a line like, "I have a fever, and the only cure for that fever, is more blowjob."

So it should be painfully obvious why this band needs to fade into obscurity. There is no guarantee they will though. They are currently recording their fourth album. I guess their fans think they don't have enough douchebags in their lives or maybe doing the Helen Keller actually was the next big dance craze to sweep the nation only nobody talked about it. This band needs to go away and people need to stop giving them money. It's the only way we can make sure they don't release a fifth album, in which I can only imagine what the track listing would look like.

Presenting, the much anticipated fifth album from 3OH!3:
Banging Chicks With Dicks. Featuring...
  1. My Dick (in your mouth)
  2. My Ass (on your face)
  3. Your Virginity Ends Tonight, Feat. Miley Cirus
  4. Two Girls, One Cup, Now My Semen.
  5. Your Pussy is Like Vodka, it ALSO Gets Me Drunk, Feat. Britney Spears
  6. Blowjob Hotel
  7. Bukkake, You Likey?
  8. Stairway to Heaven
  9. Deep Anal
  10. Hangin at the High School With a 12 Pack of Wine Coolers
  11. Boner For Sale
  12. We Are Terrible People, Feat. Chris Brown
The album will be released without a hint of irony. It will take a good month or so for one of the band members to realize the album was supposed to be titled "Banging Chicks with OUR Dicks".

Disclaimer: This article is satirical and based on opinion. I claim nothing as fact unless otherwise sourced. 3OH!3 is not the worst band ever. That would be Insane Clown Posse.

"Don't Trust Me" and "My First Kiss" is owned by Photo Finish Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group.
